Streaming on a laptop or a low-end PC

"You need a beast PC to stream" is mostly marketing. Plenty of people stream fine on mid-range laptops. What you can't do is stream demanding games at max settings while encoding at 1080p60 on a machine that was already struggling โ so let's separate what's fixable from what isn't.
First: what are you streaming?
- Just Chatting / IRL โ almost any modern laptop handles this. There's no game to render; you're just encoding a camera feed.
- Console games โ also light, because your console renders the game. Your laptop only captures and encodes. A modest machine plus a capture card works well.
- Light PC games (indies, older titles, 2D games) โ very achievable.
- Demanding PC games at high settings โ this is the hard case, and where compromises become necessary.
The settings that matter, in order
1. Use your GPU encoder
The single biggest change. In OBS: Settings โ Output โ Encoder, choose NVENC (NVIDIA), AMF (AMD), or Apple VT (Mac) rather than x264. GPU encoding barely affects game performance, whereas x264 competes directly with your game for the CPU. If your laptop has any dedicated GPU, use it.
2. Stream at 720p
720p60 is a perfectly respectable stream and roughly half the encoding work of 1080p. Most viewers genuinely will not notice, and small channels often don't get transcoding options anyway โ so a lower-resolution stream may actually reach *more* people on weak connections. Choose 720p60 over 1080p30 for gameplay; smoothness reads as quality more than resolution does.
3. Cap your in-game frame rate
If you're rendering 200fps in a game you stream at 60, you're burning GPU for nothing. Cap to 60 or 120. This frees up headroom instantly and often fixes rendering lag on its own.
4. Keep your scenes simple
Every browser source is effectively a small web page running on your machine. Five alert widgets, a chat overlay and an animated background all cost real performance. Tick "Shutdown source when not visible" on browser sources so your Starting Soon assets aren't running during gameplay.
Laptop-specific traps
- Plug it in. Laptops aggressively throttle on battery โ many will halve performance. This alone fixes a lot of mystery stuttering.
- Set the power plan to maximum performance, not balanced.
- Heat is the real enemy. Laptops throttle when hot, and streaming runs everything hot for hours. Get it off the duvet, use a stand, and consider a cooling pad. If your stream degrades 40 minutes in, it's thermal.
- Check which GPU OBS is using. Laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics sometimes run OBS on the wrong one. In Windows Graphics Settings, set OBS to High Performance.
- Close Chrome. Genuinely. Forty tabs is not free.
When it really isn't enough
If you've done all of the above and still can't hold a stable stream while playing, your realistic options are:
- Stream something lighter. An indie or older title you enjoy is a better answer than a worse stream of a demanding one โ and lighter categories are often easier to get discovered in anyway.
- Stream console instead, if you have one โ the console does the rendering.
- Record now, stream later. Recording is far less demanding than live encoding.
- Upgrade RAM before the whole machine. Going from 8 GB to 16 GB is cheap and often the actual bottleneck.
